Flu : The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus That Caused It $20.00 - Between September and December 1918, as many as 100 million people died of the flu, which raged through remote Arctic villages, Western Samoa, Philadelphia, and Cape Town with equal fury. The first cases were reported around the world on nearly the same day, and the flu was gone before the New Year with no traces remaining. It killed far more people than anthrax, Ebola, the Black Death, and AIDS, more people than died in World War I, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam combined. And the majority of victims were in the prime of life. |

The Benders : Keepers of the Devils Inn $7.95 - The book describes a series of murders perpetrated in the early 1870s by the four members of the so-called Bender family. The murders were committed at a roadside inn, on the prairie, nine miles from Cherryvale, Kansas. As travelers would stop by for a bite to eat, they would be seated in front of a curtain behind which "Kate Bender" would smack them on the head with a hammer. They would be robbed and their bodies would be dropped through a trap door in the inn floor. Later the bodies would be buried in the back yard. The travelers would just "disappear" and their families were unable to find them. About 50 people were killed before people started getting suspicious. There have been several books written about the subject over the years, but this is the only book written that is still in print. |

Bloody Williamson : A Chapter in American Lawlessness $11.48 - Down-home bullies, organized labor, the KKK and gangs of '20s bootleggers converge in this reporter-style history of the bloody county of Williamson in southern Illinois. Formed in 1839, the county reeled from 780 murderous assaults and 50 murders (with only 6 convictions) in its first 37 years and was called a "disgrace to the state" by the Chicago Tribune in 1875. By the early 1900s, the Klan and union mobs moved in, leading to "The Herrin Massacre" of 1922, which General John J. Pershing called "ruthless murder" and the New York Sun disdained as "butchery." This is a fascinating read by a top-notch midwestern historian, who examines the unusual mix of forces leading to generations of fear and lawlessness. |

Into the American Woods : Negotiators on the Pennsylvania Frontier $11.96 - Into the American Woods examines how semiprofessional negotiators defined a "middle ground" in frontier Pennsylvania where schisms between Anglos and native Americans were temporarily appeased for mutual economic and political gain. English colonial administrators, seeking to purchase land, establish trade, and avert conflict, became dependent on opportunists at the colony's edge, such as German entrepreneur Conrad Weiser, or trader George Groghan, to negotiate with the Delaware, Shawnee, Iroquois, and other regional tribes and bands. |

Montcalm and Wolfe : The French and Indian War $16.00 - This is the definitive book on the French and Indian War although there has been much scholarship and field work since the book was written over 100 years ago. The Da Capo paperback edition is probably the best one available because of the maps and illustrations included. It is notable since it is the only book in print which bears an image of Lord Howe, killed at the Battle of Trout Brook, the prelude to the Battle of Ticonderoga in July 1758. The Massacre of Ft. William Henry on Lake George, N.Y. is a gripping and sad account. |

Betrayals : Fort William Henry and the 'Massacre $11.96 - On the morning of August 9, 1757, British and colonial officers defending the besieged Fort William Henry surrendered to French forces, accepting the generous "parole of honor" offered by General Montcalm. As the column of British and colonials marched with their families and servants to Fort Edward some miles south, they were set upon by the Indian allies of the French. The resulting "massacre," thought to be one of the bloodiest days of the French and Indian War, became forever ingrained in American myth by James Fenimore Cooper's classic novel The Last of the Mohicans. |

History of the Early Settlement and Indian Wars of Western Virginia : Embracing an Account of the Various Expeditions in the West, Previous to 1795 $37.50 - This is an able retelling of life and death on the 18th-century frontier adjoining colonial Virginia (now mostly West Virginia), Pennsylvania, and the Ohio Territory. Most of the narrative focuses on the intensely violent period on the frontier from the beginnings of the French and Indian War through the end of the century. Mr. De Hass' coverage includes General Braddock's ill-fated expedition to Ft. New York in the Revolution : Volume XV of Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New York. State Archives $49.95 - This book serves as a supplement to New York in the Revolution as Colony and State, by James A. Roberts and Frederick G. Mather. Notwithstanding the primacy of Roberts and Mather's opus, it is not comprehensive, and its contents must be supplemented by Berthold Fernow's New York in the Revolution, published originally as Volume XV of Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New York in 1887, to render a complete accounting of New York's participation in the American Revolution. |

New York in the Revolution (2 Volume Set) : As Colony and State $60.00 - Some three years after the publication of the second edition of New York in the Revolution, the State Comptroller's Office published a second volume, or Supplement, of New York in the Revolution, in effect, a compilation of the documents and records in the Comptroller's Office that were used in compiling the rolls and rosters in the first volume. In the reprint edition that we are now offering, these two scarce volumes have been combined into one, and New York's contribution to the Revolutionary War is finally enshrined in a single, accessible, and affordable volume. |
